Love of the game can be measured in catches and touchdowns, but for Wagoner senior Elijah Love, football has always meant something deeper. The sport has become a place where faith, friendships and personal growth come together, shaping the player and person he continues to become.
As he enters his senior season, Love points first to the people who have encouraged him away from the field. His church community has provided the support and accountability that influence every part of his life.
“My church family inspires me to be the best version of myself and always supports me,” he said.
That foundation extends beyond football. Love enjoys English in the classroom and still remembers the impact of his elementary reading teacher, Mrs. Erwin, who helped spark his appreciation for learning at an early age.
On Friday nights, Love lines up at wide receiver, where success depends as much on concentration as athletic ability. One of the biggest challenges, he said, is quickly picking up coaches’ hand signals from across the field while the game is moving at full speed. It is a responsibility that demands focus, communication and composure.
Football has also taught him lessons that reach far beyond the scoreboard.
“It’s taught me even when things get hard, control your breathing and keep going,” he said.
Before every game, Love takes a moment to pray, centering himself before kickoff and reminding himself of the perspective he wants to carry onto the field. Those quiet moments help settle his nerves and allow him to play with confidence and purpose.
Some of his favorite memories have come during unforgettable moments in competition. Scoring his first varsity touchdown as a freshman remains at the top of the list, while watching a helicopter deliver the game ball during a playoff game is another experience he will never forget.
Yet the moments he treasures most often happen between the plays.
“I enjoy getting to be with the guys having fun,” he said. “The thing I love most is how we motivate each other.”
Love also credits teammate Dacaden Ford as someone who has influenced him through his work ethic and style of play. Away from football, he enjoys relaxing, spending time with his church community and volunteering whenever he can. Those opportunities to serve others reinforce the values that have become central to both his athletic career and everyday life.
With his senior season ahead, Love’s goals remain rooted in the same values that have guided him from the beginning: faith, perseverance and making the most of every opportunity alongside his teammates.
