A LITTLE SHORT BUT STILL GREAT-sponsored by A-Best Roofing

It was shaping up as a season of destiny for the Wagoner Lady Bulldog softball team as they barreled their way to what they hoped would be a Class 4A state championship. It would certainly be special for the Fourkiller sisters who were hoping to make the state tournament on the 25th anniversary of their mother’s appearance with the first ever Wagoner softball team to make it that far.

It was special for Goose Hutchens who was back after missing last year with injury, and for sophomore pitching ace Zoie Griffin who set a school record for strikeouts last year.

And it looked like everything would come together as the second-ranked Bulldogs met number 15 Miami last week in the area tournament-the last stop before state- and took the opening game in the best-of-three series. But Miami came back and beat Wagoner two straight to end the dream.

But nonetheless, it was still a season to remember for the Bulldogs who went 28-6 on the year.

Hutchens tied and possibly set a new single season homerun record with 23 dingers on the season while batting an amazing .656 with 45 RBIs, 40 hits and a .970 fielding percentage at catcher

Griffin continued her penchant for whiffing opposition batters with 362 strikeouts in 174 innings pitched while recording an unbelievable .763 ERA and going 27-5 on the year.

And while the season ended on a disappointing note, coach Johnnie Hutchens made a promise.

“We had a great season. We just ran out of gas at the end. We will be back and better than ever.”
