For Keyshaun Brown, some of the most important lessons from football started long before Friday nights at Wagoner High School.

Brown, a senior football player, still carries advice from his grandmother, Celestine Hyeche, that took on greater meaning once he began experiencing the challenges of competition.

“Practice doesn’t make perfect; it makes you better,” she told him.

“At first, I didn’t fully understand what she meant, even though it seemed straightforward,” Brown said. “But once I started competing and faced adversity, her words made perfect sense and have stayed with me ever since.”

That idea of continuing to improve has followed Brown throughout his athletic career. Rather than measuring himself by one accomplishment, he takes pride in the standards he has set, and the work required to reach them.

“I’ve reached personal milestones by setting goals and high standards for myself, then working hard to accomplish them,” Brown said.

Football has also given him someone to share much of that journey with. Brown and teammate Jonah Smith have played alongside each other since second grade, creating a bond that extends well beyond the field.

“He’s like a brother to me, so whenever he gives me constructive criticism, I’ve learned to take it in because I know he wants nothing but the best for me,” Brown said.

The perseverance Brown has developed through football carries into the rest of his life. When challenges come, he has learned to trust himself and keep moving forward, a mentality reinforced by his grandfather, Victor Hyeche.

“He has taught me that once I start something, no matter how difficult it becomes, quitting is never an option,” Brown said.

Away from football, Brown serves on the Leadership Council and appreciates the support surrounding him in Wagoner. For Brown, the familiarity of a small town is part of what makes it special.

“The people here always have your back, and they truly make it feel like home,” Brown said.

As Brown enters his senior year, those relationships, lessons and expectations remain connected. The goals may change, but the approach stays the same: keep working, keep improving and finish what he starts.
