OFFENSE
“Unfinished Business” defines the mindset of the Bulldogs who are anxious to erase the memories of last year’s setback in the Class 4A state championship game. And with the talents of a senior laden lineup, Wagoner has the tools to win the gold ball in 2024. Kale Charboneau (6-0, 215, Sr.) enters his third season as the starting quarterback. In his 28 previous starts, the VYPE Top 100 pick has produced over 4,900 yards passing and 1,600 yards rushing in his career and owns the school single season passing record after completing 218 of his 324 attempts for 22 touchdowns last year plus adding another 976 yards rushing for 16 scores. His primary targets will include tight end Alex Shieldnight (6-4, 240, Sr.) who grabbed 27 catches along with Anthony Coleman (6-2, 185, Sr.) who recorded 17 offensive touches for 130 yards and three scores before being injured after five games and Matson Swanson (5-11, 160, Sr.) who made 38 receptions for 460 yards as well as gaining critical yards running the football. The ‘Dogs ground game with showcase Trenton Edwards (6-0, 170, Sr.) who totaled 677 yards rushing with nine scores with a boost from Stevie Brown (5-10, 170, Jr.) and the aggressive play of Bryce Steel (5-9, 170, Sr.) at halfback while Aven Goodlin (5-9, 155, Jr.) will create another offensive option this season. Lane Beebe (6-4, 245, Sr.) and Trevor Fowler (6-3, 245, Sr.) will anchor the offensive front line along with Zach Dismang (6-0, 285, So.) and Noah Peet (5-10, 215, So.). Another threat to the Bulldogs offensive point parade will include the special team talents of placekicker Rhett Butler (5-10, 155, So.) who toed through 22 of 26 PAT attempts. “The development and execution in the offensive line will be a key ingredient to our success,” said Hall of Fame head coach Dale Condict, who begins his 19th year at Wagoner.
DEFENSE
Opponents will once again encounter an aggressive and attacking defensive unit including OU commit and VYPE Top 100 pick Alex Shieldnight, who charted 13 sacks among his 83 stops that included 34 tackles for loss from his defensive end position a year ago. Condict expects Anthony Harris (5-10, 205, So.) to be disruptive at the opposite end position while Dax Griffin (6-4, 285, Sr.) anchors the defensive front at nose guard. The linebacker unit will be dominating including Kale Charboneau, who recorded 114 tackles, 39 for minus yardage plus four interceptions from the inside position playing alongside Bryce Steel who totaled 45 stops for loss among his 131 tackles and nine sacks while outside linebacker Gavin Miller (6-0, 205, Sr.) returns from injury last year after a standout season as a sophomore to join efforts with Dejay Pierce (5-10, 175, Sr.) who made 45 tackles with four fumble recoveries and Javon Smith (5-11, 185, Jr.) who totaled 28 tackles last year. The secondary is fast and physical led by the return from injury efforts of safety Anthony Coleman, who owns a D-I offer from Grambling as well as Aven Goodlin, Stylan McHenry (6-4, 185, Jr.) and Beau McFarland (5-9, 150, Sr.) while Matson Swanson returns at cornerback supported by the speedy skills of Decaden Ford (5-9, 165, So.). “Last year’s championship game has definitely left a bad taste in our mouth,” confirmed Condict. “This team is very motivated to FINISH IT the right way this season.”
