Wagoner’s Zoie Griffin – Softball Spotlight – Presented by A-Best Roofing

ZOIE GRIFFIN

WAGONER HIGH SCHOOL

Young Zoie Griffin was certainly a hot topic of conversation in the softball world last fall. The freshman fanned an amazing 321 batters, second most across all classes in the state with an ERA of under one while walking just 35.

“I started out playing baseball before getting into softball around age eight and then travel ball around 12. Playing travel ball where you play against older girls all the time really made the transition from middle school to high school pretty easy. I throw a change-up, screwball, rise ball, drop ball and curve and my drop ball is probably my best pitch. I guess I got into pitching when I was youngbecause I was the only one on our team that could get the ball over the plate,” she laughed. While most of the accolades surround her pitching, Zoie is also a pretty fair hitter, batting .300 last year.

“I like to hit so batting for me is just the icing on the cake of softball,” explained Griffin.

Her coach Johnny Hutchens said that her performance last year was not a surprise to him as he had seen her play and knew the high level of competition, she faced in travel ball. Zoie and her battery-mate Goose Hutchens have played together for several years and were on the 2021 team that won the Little League World Series.

“Goose will be the first to call me out or to pick me up and when she’s behind the plate she calls the pitches because she knows me so well,” said Zoie who is also in the National Honor Society.

The upcoming 2024 season could be one to remember according to Zoie.

“Goose is back after missing last season so we’re finally healthy and things have looked pretty good so far in practice.”

The Bulldogs are still young with just three seniors and six sophomores but going 23-12 last year without Hutchens and losing to the eventual state champs, puts Wagoner in a great position to challenge for the gold ball this fall as Zoie Griffin is focused on having the most strikeouts in the state this year.
