Wagoner senior Witt Edwards is a guy of many talents who has seen his aspirations change as he has grown older. 

“Wrestling was my big thing when I was little growing up in Fairfax and I also played football, baseball, and basketball and got into rodeoing,” said Witt. “My dad coached football at the time so a lot of Saturdays it would be a little league football game and then off to a rodeo somewhere. It was that way through junior high and there was even a point around the eighth grade that I could see myself competing in the National Finals Rodeo.”

Witt moved to Wagoner in the sixth grade where football again moved to the forefront.

“I started out playing quarterback and then moved to wide receiver and took off with it,” said Witt who also runs track for the Bulldogs and has played baseball from time to time. 

Witt’s dad Brian became the Wagoner wrestling coach and so in high school wrestling once again became important and Witt excelled placing fourth at state his freshman and sophomore years and third last year. He probably could have graduated early but wanted to stay in school and take one more run at a wrestling championship this year.

“I think I learned a lot from my losses at state the past three years especially last year when I lost in the semifinals in the last seconds. That’s really spurred me on to make a last effort to win it this year.”

Looking to the future, Witt has decided to take his football talents to Vanderbilt University.

“They gave me so much love and they knew I could play two or three different positions, I just couldn’t pass it up,” said Edwards.

Although Witt considers last year’s state football championship game where he had a big touchdown pass reception the highlight of his athletic career at Wagoner, there’s probably one thing that would top that.

“If I were to win the state wrestling title this year and have the chance to hug my dad there by my side, that would be a bigger thrill.”
