KEYTON COLE BOLSTERS THE DEFENSE-sponsored by Kevin Grover GMC

In a sport where offense gets most of the headlines, success in football at Wagoner High School has been as much or more about defense. In their march to the Class 4A state title last year, the Bulldogs gave up an average of just over seven points a game and senior linebacker Keyton Cole was a big part of that success with 119 tackles during the season. But even on defense Keyton found a bit of offensive enjoyment as he recalled some of the highlights of last year’s championship drive.

“In our first game against Coweta we trailed late in the game. Their quarterback started scrambling and my stepbrother (Gavin Miller) knocked the ball loose from him. I picked it up and took it in for the score to put us ahead. Boy, was I excited-it was awesome even though we ended up losing the game. I also think about the Tuttle game. We always seem to get them in the playoffs, and it always feels good to beat them. And then there was the last game where we came back to beat Cushing after they had drilled us in the regular season. That was really special.”

To help make his senior year great and get some recruiting exposure, Keyton spent a lot of the summer at camps.

“I went to camps at OU, OSU, TCU, Rivals, NSU and TU. These camps are awesome. You get to meet new people, compete, and learn new skills. You can always learn something-you’re never perfect.”

With the new season underway, Cole is pretty optimistic about the Bulldogs outlook.

“In our 7-on-7 league we finished second just behind Bixby and we drilled people in scrimmages. Since a lot of us were just sophomores last year, I think that year of experience will make us pretty good again,” said Keyton who is also the long snapper on kicks, wrestles, and plays baseball for the Bulldogs. The 2023 season looks to be another good one for Wagoner as they continue singing Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight” before each game.
